Slovenia

Robert's Thoughts

My Hungarian friends are big-time foodies. They think, talk, write and worry about food all the time. Of late, they have begun campaigning for me to visit Slovenia because – in their opinion – that country has perhaps the best sea-food restaurants of the Central European region.

Airbnb Bedroom Ceiling

So I agreed to a drive-through Slovenia by car. We drove from Budapest to Ljubljana, Slovenia’s Capital (a four-and-a-half-hour drive), and checked into an Airbnb housed in a restored building five hundred years old. (The ceiling of our bedroom sported a beautiful fresco).

We had dinner in the restaurant on the ground floor (outstanding food) and took the funicular to the castle on top of the hill. After a brief walking tour in the old city (precious), we continued our trip and visited Portoroz, a beach town on the Adriatic where we stayed for a week during which we survived a three-day rainstorm the likes of which I seldom saw in my life.

On our way back to Budapest we detoured to visit the famous Postojna Forty-million year-old stalactite-stalagmite caves.

Postojna Cave

When leaving the cave, after a two-and-a-half hour tour on foot and mini-railway inside, we had to walk across a bridge to cross a creek that had swollen so much during our visit that wooden boxes were required to be placed on top of the bridge to keep our feet dry.

As for the food in Slovenia?

My friends were right: DIVINE

Glad you enjoyed the food and the sights / sites of Slovenia. I have good memories from 2001 when i spent a month at the University of Ljubljana. The city is a jewel and the countryside is spectacular. Sorry you had so much rain…but glad you saw the caves, I was hoping to kayak the Soca (sp?) river but the weeks went by quickly and the students kept me busy.
